HELP US EARN MONEY FOR
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND CONSERVATION
Connecticut Audubon Society EcoTravel acts as a full service travel agency and can help you with all of your travel needs, including something as simple as a flight, hotel, or car reservation. If you find a trip offered by another company and would like to book that tour, you can signup through CAS EcoTravel and help us to earn the commission monies. These funds would then go back toward our environmental education and conservation projects. It costs you nothing but does so much to support our important mission. Listed below are many companies with which we have already done business or have established a relationship. Most of these companies offer natural history and culturally based tours, some as you might imagine are quite elaborate. If you visit our website at www.ecotravel.ctaudubon.org you will find links to their websites, listing all of their tour offerings. Your travel does not have to be with a company that we have listed or a company that offers tours only like ours. We can help you book golf vacations, scuba trips, island getaways, cruises, rafting tours, museum tours, academic tours, and more, all while earning money to support the programs of the Connecticut Audubon Society. If you would like us to help you find a tour you have in mind, give us a call and we would be happy to assist you in locating a qualified provider or creating a custom tour. By letting us help you, you will then help us! Please, give us a call at 800-996-8747 or email us at ecotravel@ctaudubon.org
Canada’s Northern Territories
Multiple Departures! June - September!
The north is a region of diverse land form, wildlife, geology, peoples and scenery. Stretching from Alaska, across the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, most of the Canadian continent lies above the 60th parallel - the "Land of the Midnight Sun." Looking at a map, it becomes quite clear that the best way to explore, experience, and hike through this vast land is via the rivers. Serving as fluid conduits, these waterways, beautiful in their own rite, cut through the heart of the features that collectively form the "magnetic" north. For two decades author, outfitter and guide, Neil Hartling and his team of skilled river guides have explored these waterways and discovered the great gems of the world. Call for details of the many different itineraries. Fees start at $2,317 for eight days.
Amazon Cruises
Many Departures in ’08 and '09 7 Nights!

Travelers explore areas very rarely visited, and seek out the mysterious life of the wilderness that stirs in the forest and in the heart of the Amazon Basin. This is the most thorough, detailed, and sophisticated trip offered in the entire Amazon and comes with rave reviews from past CT Audubon Society participants. This trip is like being on a time machine in that one is able to visit places that have not changed for millions of years. Truly the trip of a lifetime and an easy tour for seniors and families! Fee: $2,300 plus air. Call for dates! Extensions available! Great trip!
The Connecticut Lakes
May 29 - June 1, 2008 4 Days!
Explore the headwaters of The Connecticut River. Connecticut Lakes Region is wonderfully unique in many ways. It is a pristine region at the very tip of New Hampshire offering unlimited, unspoiled wilderness. This is the center of the North Country’s fishing and hunting. Here the mighty Connecticut River is born, forming in it’s passage the Third, Second and First Connecticut Lakes and Man-made Lake Francis. The historic “Indian Stream Territory” was once an independent nation established in 1832 during the border dispute between Canada and the United States. Pittsburg township is the largest in the US, containing over 300,000 acres of timberland, mountains, lakes, streams and forest trails. Birds may include Spruce Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Alder Flycatcher, and more. Come experience nature at its best. Fee: $798. Leader: Andy Rzeznikiewicz.
Adirondack Adventure
June 5 - 8, 2008 4 Days!
The Adirondack Region of Northern New York includes the six million-acre Adirondack Park, and is best known for its mountains and lakes, but villages, farms, museums, restaurants, artisan shops and a wide variety of accommodations also characterize the Adirondacks. The Park itself is the size of the state of Vermont, with expansive blocks of backcountry, interspersed with private homes, villages and tracts of corporate forest lands. In the Adirondacks, it is possible to hike to an isolated waterfall in the afternoon, then spend the evening strolling Main Street. This trip will venture, by special arrangement, onto many of the privately held paper company lands, searching for the nesting birds of the northern forests. One can expect to find Black-backed Woodpeckers, Yellow-bellied Flycatchers, Olive-sided Flycatchers, and many others in this diverse habitat. Travelers will stay at The Wawbeek, a turn of the century “Great Camp” set on a 40-acre sprawl of dense woods, giant hemlocks, wildflower fields, and a lovely beach. Trails lead to numerous private spots, where Adirondack chairs and hammocks wait, providing a perfect place to read or daydream beneath hemlocks and chalk white birches; a wonderful escape for the birdwatcher and the person just looking to “get away” for the weekend! Fee: $875. Leaders: Sean O’Brien and CAS Staff.
Explore and S’Mores: Selden Island Weekend
July 25 - 27, 2008 3 Days!
Campers are welcome as we set out for a 2 night-3 day adventure to Selden Island, Connecticut’s largest island comprising over 600 acres. We will be dropped off at a campsite on the Island, set up camp and hike about the varied landscape. Enjoy the sandy beaches, large trees, steep granite cliffs, luxurious strands of grass and learn of the Island’s rich history of quarry mining and the hundreds of people who worked on the island chipping away at 600-800 million year old rock. This is a primitive campsite with an outhouse, no electricity, and no running water. Come and enjoy getting back to nature and the simple life! Call for details!
Arizona’s Monsoon
July 26 - August 3, 2008 9 Days!
Ten months of the year, the landscape of southeastern Arizona is dominated by shades of brown. Except during a few brief months of winter, all that breaks the monotony are verdant ribbons of cottonwoods and sycamores that follow watercourses, great and small and often hidden underground, and greenish mesquites and live oaks at low and middle elevations, respectively. Come July, though, moisture from the Gulf of Mexico arrives, and an amazing transformation begins. Where barren roadsides and the parched, golden remnants of last year’s monsoon existed in June, lush grasses and wildflowers command all open space from valley floor to mountain peak by August, and the abundance of surface water spawns a wondrous variety of life at all levels. By early September the rains have ceased, and by October the land has once more been served the harsh reminder that this really is a desert. August is the one month of the year when birds are most abundant, in number of species as well as in number of individuals, in southeastern Arizona, long considered a mandatory destination by serious birders the world over. Grassland species, like Cassin’s and Botteri’s sparrows, are in full song, having waited until just this window of time to build their nests. Sulphur-bellied Flycatchers, Blue Grosbeaks and Varied Buntings, having arrived later in the spring, are in glorious abundance, while other area specialties, like Elegant Trogons and Thick-billed Kingbirds, plus the regular breeders, have doubled or even tripled their numbers. The fall migration is well underway, with shorebirds, gulls and terns showing-up haphazardly at ephemeral pools and ponds created by rogue cloudbursts, and flycatchers, warblers, sparrows and buntings moving through the vegetation like a river in flood. Hummingbirds are the real drawing card, with as many as a dozen species of these tropical jewels possible in a few days’ time. When you factor in the birds plus knowledgeable, colorful leader, you have a memorable travel experience, regardless of your level of interest or expertise in birding. Leader is CAS Director of Coastal Education Frank Gallo. Fee: $1,898 plus air.
Maryland’s Eastern Shore
July 25 - 28, 2008 4 Days!

Programming at the museum will include exciting boat rides down the Miles River, trotlining trips, wonderful cooking demonstrations by local restaurants, live music, and more. Birding destinations will include Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, Little Creek Wildlife Management Area, and the Ted Harvey Conservation Area. Expect the rare and unusual perhaps including a Curlew Sandpiper or Whiskered Tern for which this area is famous. Fee: $875. CAS leader is Miley Bull, Senior Director of Science and Conservation.
Monhegan Island
September 26 - 29, 2008 4 Days!
Join Leader Joe Bear on a relaxing tour of Monhegan Island at the height of the migration season. Monhegan, off the coast of Maine, serves as a stopover point for birds caught out over open water. They drop onto the island to eat and rest for the day. Because there are no roads and no cars on the island, participants hike the many walking trails while searching for what arrived overnight. Nature and beauty are at their apex on Monhegan in the fall. Limited to seven participants, so call early to sign up. Fee: $895.
Block Island Weekend
October 3 - 5, 2008 3 Days!
Explore the wilds of Block Island after most of the summer tourists have left the beaches and town. Often a magnet for wayward birds, “Block” will delight travelers with its island architecture, wild flowers, and natural beauty. Migration is at its peak, so expect to see lots of birds when the winds cooperate like they did in 2007, carrying to the island thousands of warblers, rare sparrows, and vagrants, including a Western Kingbird! Experienced leaders will share their knowledge and enthusiasm for this special place as participants visit the bluffs, lighthouses, back roads, beautiful beaches, and serene harbors. Group size is limited for the best travel experience. Fee: $525. This will be a special celebration as one of our travelers returns for his tenth year in a row on the Block Island trip.
Jekyll Island Getaway
October 6 – 12, 2008 7 Days!

Much of the island remains in a natural state and provides an excellent way for travelers to experience a true barrier island, its ecology, geologic history, and importance in the ecosystem. Okefenokee Swamp, its name an Indian word meaning “land of the trembling earth,” is a vast and mysterious place that has remained unchanged for centuries. A narrated boat tour through the swamp and walks on the trails will offer chances to see the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker, alligators, and more. The Galapagos have been aptly described as the world’s greatest living laboratory for the study and observation of nature. Ever since Darwin’s famous voyage on the Beagle, research there has contributed greatly to our knowledge of the evolution of life on earth. Situated on the equator some 600 miles off the coast of South America, this remote volcanic archipelago remains much as it was millions of years ago. Over the course of centuries, animals and plant life from the Americas reached the islands and gradually evolved into new life forms. Many of its bird, plant, and fish species are found nowhere else on earth. The opportunities for observation and photography are spectacular because in addition to the striking natural beauty and unique flora and fauna, one of the special fascinations of the Galapagos is that the animals show virtually no fear of humans. Sea lions, iguanas, nesting birds, and other “wildlife” are often within arm’s reach, giving one the feeling of being immersed in the natural world as nowhere else. Fee includes meals, land and luxury yacht accommodations, and guides. Fee: $4,298 includes in-country flight. Leader: Milan Bull.

The Davis Mountains and its forested habitats and montane grasslands provide an excellent chance for Montezuma Quail, nesting Common Black-Hawk, and the vocal nocturnal Common Poorwill.
