Nature Photos of the Week

Upcoming Tours!

The EcoTravel Program is an important part of reaching Connecticut Audubon Society's education goals. The program now offers over 60 day trips, and 20 domestic and international overnight travel destinations. Day trips concentrate mainly in Connecticut but also reach to neighboring states, visiting sanctuaries and museums of special interest. Overnight travel from two days to two weeks, has included over 30 states and countries on five continents. Places visited are among the most environmentally significant and interesting habitats in the world and tour leaders are experienced, personable, and enthusiastic about sharing these special experiences with travelers.  We are currently expanding our family oriented environmental education to offer more for children.

Enjoy these photos from some of our upcoming travel offerings and please, give us a call to register or get more information on these great adventures.

Arkansas - January 6 - 12, 2008

Brinkley's new found fame.

The Connecticut Audubon Society is offering from January 6 -12, 2008 an exciting expedition into the southern woodlands to visit the primeval forests that once (and perhaps today) hosted the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. We promise you no audience with the famed bird, but just the visit to the incredible tracts of southern woodland will be enough to conjure the feel of the vastness of these ancient lands. Hear about the history of the area and tales of the elusive Grail Bird from some of the “characters” involved in the search.

Site of the 2004 record of Ivory-billed Woodpecker.

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker, once thought to be extinct, has been confirmed and documented by Cornell University in the Cache River and White River forests of eastern Arkansas. Ivory-billed Woodpeckers once inhabited the bottomland hardwoods and pine forests of southeastern United States and Cuba. Never common, this large black and white woodpecker disappeared as its habitat has increasingly declined.

Nantucket - January 18 - 21, 2008

Nantucket Moors

Once on Nantucket, travelers can revel in the peace and quiet of an off-season resort, the inescapable sense of history, and the abundance of open space along the wind blown moors and interior pine barrens. Participants enjoy the sunset spectacle of thousands of Long-tailed Ducks flying to their nighttime roost and then relax at one of the delightful pubs in the heart of the historic town.

We have added an additional day to the trip at the request of returning participants. Enjoy this relaxing long weekend. Birds we hope to see include Razorbill, Northern Gannet, Iceland Gull, and the hopefully a few rarities. Leader is Frank Gallo, Longtime Nantucket Tour Leader.

Guatemala - February 14 - 27, 2008

Keel-billed Toucan © Frank Gallo

The tiny country of Guatemala with its ancient Mayan culture and history, volcanic vistas, and incredible birdlife, is a dream come true for birders! Guatemala is home to more than 700 species of birds, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. What do Pink-headed Warblers, Blue-throated Motmots, and Cabinis Tanagers all have in common besides their spectacular colors? Guatemala!

Ruins at Tikal

Travel from cloud forest to shade-grown coffee plantations, tropical dry forest, to tropical rain forests, from its Pacific slopes to the central highlands, to search out Guatemala ’s many regionally endemic species. The Tikal Extension opens views into the Mayan past; witness the sunrise from atop pyramids nestled within tropical splendor, in the company of Orange-breasted Falcons, Ocellated Turkeys, and colorful toucans and parrots. Guatemala has embraced ecotourism and invited in the world. Its unique history and geography, combined with a modern tourist infrastructure, good roads, comfortable lodges, and inviting food have made Guatemala the new premier destination.
